Liberal Islam in Singapore - The Reading Group

Labels: , ,
The purpose of the 1st Open Letter was to alert key Muslim leaders about the existence of "The Reading Group"; a group of well-educated Muslims advocating liberal interpretations of Islam. While the 2nd Open Letter attempted to alert them of an active member of this group, Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib, working as an executive in MUIS.

These open letters were penned in 2009 without any response or even acknowledgement from MUIS. In fact, back in 2009, there were THREE known active members of  "The Reading Group" who were also executives in MUIS - Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib, Alfian Yasrif Kuchit and Muhammed Fadli Muhammed Fawzi.

Now in 2014, five years later, after much feedback from both the Muslim public as well as some of our religious scholars (asatizah) about the threat of liberal ideologies creeping into MUIS policies and mainstream Muslim society, Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib is now the Senior Programme Consultant in MUIS Academy, while Alfian Yasrif Kuchit is now the President of the Syariah Court.

The President of the Syariah Court changes his Facebook banner on Christmas Eve.

The disquiet from MUIS regarding the recent LGBT controversy faced by Associate Professor, Dr Khairudin Aljunied, is disheartening. Especially when tacit support is shown by Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib, Senior Programme Consultant in MUIS Academy, to Khairulanwar Zaini, a fellow contributor of "The Reading Group", who started the petition against Dr Khairudin Aljunied.
